01 How Do I Join A Virtual Court Appearance In Ontario?
Find your courthouse in the directory, then use the Zoom link for the courtroom listed on your court documents. If you cannot use video, call the listed number and enter the meeting ID and passcode when prompted. Join a few minutes early and keep your microphone muted until your matter is called.
02 Do I Have To Attend Court In Person Instead?
Sometimes. The Ontario Court of Justice decides which stages of a criminal case may be held virtually, and a judge or justice of the peace can order you to attend in person. If you have been ordered to attend in person, you must do so even if a Zoom link exists for that courtroom.
03 What If The Zoom Link Does Not Work?
Try the call-in number with the meeting ID and passcode, and confirm the details on the courthouse’s official page linked on each listing. Courts update their coordinates from time to time. If you cannot connect, contact the courthouse or your lawyer right away so the court knows you tried to attend.
04 Can I Record Or Share A Virtual Court Hearing?
No. Recording, photographing or broadcasting a court proceeding without the presiding judicial officer’s permission is an offence under the Courts of Justice Act and may be contempt of court. Some proceedings are also subject to publication bans.
05 Can A Lawyer Appear Virtually On My Behalf?
In many case management appearances a lawyer can appear for you, which may mean you do not need to attend at all. Speak with a criminal defence lawyer about whether a designation of counsel is appropriate for your matter.
